Palazzo Vecchio, Tuscana, Italy

If Leonardo Da Vinci had seen Palazzo Vecchio he would perhaps have chosen it as the backdrop for one of his paintings, making it immortal... a rural village rich in history and great charm dating back to 1300 and located on a hill surrounded by its vineyards, all cultivated with Nobile di Montepulciano, and overlooking the Valdichiana it is visible from afar for its large and characteristic pine tree.

round 1300 Palazzo Vecchio was part of the ancient Fattoria di Valiano and dominated the border area between what was the Papal State and the Grand Duchy of Tuscany, becoming over time witness to major historical events including the border wars between Siena and Perugia and the reclamation of the Chiana Valley (1788 -1859).

The Reclamation

Bonifica is a long story and two wines from Palazzo Vecchio, Il Nobile di Montepulciano “Maestro” and the Rosso di Montepulciano “Dogana”, hark back to this story that, beyond the official dates, begins in the Etruscan period and sees its real conclusion in the years around 1920. And if the Maestro wants to indicate the territoriality of the wine through its name, the same is true for the Dogana, recalling that Valiano was a customs area between the Papal State and the Grand Duchy of Tuscany.

Old Palace

Owned, during the Renaissance, by the Spedale degli Innocenti of Florence, the Fattoria was transformed over time, becoming in 1882 what is now the Capezzine Agricultural School. At the end of the 60s, the part including Palazzo Vecchio became the property of Count Riccardo Zorzi who gave continuity to the winemaking vocation of the company, later taken up by his daughter Maria Alessandra and her husband Marco Sbernadori who began the renovation in 1982, while in 1990, following a widespread program of replanting the vineyards, Palazzo Vecchio produced its first vintage of Vino Nobile, and it is precisely in the name of continuity that since the 2000s the children Maria Luisa and Luca have worked for the promotion and production of Vino Nobile di Montepulciano di Palazzo Vecchio.
