Michele Satta, Tuscana, Italy

"… This is the character with which we intend to make wine: the continuous search for quality as the expression of the unique and unrepeatable nature of the vineyard and its encounter with the man" -Michele Satta

Origins

The Michele Satta company originated in 1983 at Castagneto Carducci, in the heart of the Bolgheri D.O.C., of which Michele was one of the founders; it is a region inhabited by important families and wine entrepreneurs who have made their mark on the wine production history of Tuscany in the last 30 years.

The estate is family-run, with a now constant size of 25 hectares, and currently produces 150,000 bottles a year, all obtained from its own grapes.

The philosophy of the Michele Satta estate draws its origin from the life of its founder: a boundless, all-inclusive passion for agriculture that he picked up during his initial experience as a laborer on the farm at Castagneto Carducci.

One Passion: Wine

Between 1983 and 1987 this passion was focused on a single product, wine, because“wine is grapes that are transformed, that become something else, which is a great deal more attractive and good and which changes over time; something that inebriates you a little and opens up a space in your heart”.

What is more, wine is also a unique expression of its region, of a vineyard, of the type of grape that is planted in it, of time, and of the way in which man has dedicated to it his passion, his intuition, his errors: how he has bent a cane, how many buds he has left, and how he has worked the soil.

Wine is a poem: it is something made by a man in a specific place, something which will never be repeated.

The peculiarity of the DOC Bolgheri, established in 1984, is that it comprises an area of land facing the Tyrrhenian Sea, towards the west and surrounded by hills on the remaining cardinal points, as well as a theatre watches the stage.

It is of significant importance the presence of the sea for three reasons.

he first is that it reflects the sunlight, thus allowing for a quantity and quality of light that allows a full and complete functioning of the photosynthetic apparatus of the plant, bringing the grape to very complex phenolic ripening.

The second very important aspect in that the sea acts as a thermal flywheel: in definition, the summers are not too hot during the day and yet, cool at night. In this way the plant is not stressed, but rather is induced to a more fluid functioning of the secondary metabolism.

Finally, there are winds blowing toward the coast. The wind is important because it makes the air less saturated with water. Moisture is one of the major causes of the development of fungal diseases and largely reflects the light of the sun, reducing the radiation on the plants. The winds that blow from the sea are directed by Monte Capanne (1,019 meters high) located on the island of Elba.

The surrounding hills protect the vineyards from the wind and violent alongside sporadic showers especially in the summer. Therefore August rains that could cause insidious rot little before the harvest, are less of a threat.

The Vineyard

"… Do not even need to stop in front of the vineyard and recognize the familiar and unheard features, only need the moment of the encounter"

Between Hills, Sea and Wind

The peculiarity of the DOC Bolgheri, established in 1984, is that it comprises an area of land facing the Tyrrhenian Sea, towards the west and surrounded by hills on the remaining cardinal points, as well as a theatre watches the stage.

It is of significant importance the presence of the sea for three reasons.

25 Hectares in the Bolgheri D.O.C.

The estate is family-run, with a now constant size of 25 hectares, and currently produces 150,000 bottles a year, all obtained from its own grapes.

The Bolgheri region is composed of the area that faces west towards the Tyrrhenian Sea, whereas on the other three sides of the compass it is surrounded by hills that create a sort of natural amphitheater, with characteristics that are different from anywhere else in the world.

A Versatile Ground

The soils are medium-textured, pebbly and with a considerable loam content; they are very deep and collect all the rainwater that is not absorbed by the surrounding hills.

These are very well-drained soils, which give the roots the possibility to develop and grow in a significant manner.

Sustainability

The farm produces sustainable grapes through biodynamic agronomic practices and to sustainability through photovoltaic energy production.

The vineyards, which face north and west, are in the most southern zone of the region, in the district known as “Accattapane”; they are Guyot-trained and with low plant density per hectare, so as not to stress the vines.

In each vineyard there are the cultivars that, after years of observation, the estate considers to be most representative of the area: Viognier, Vermentino and Sauvignon for the whites; Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah, Sangiovese and Teroldego for the reds.

In the winery, vinification is traditional, with the stalks in the case of Sangiovese and Syrah. For maturation, barriques, amphoras, and concrete tanks are used.

Michele Satta, Bolgheri Rosso 2022

Bolgheri - D.O.C.

This is the estate's expression of all the young vineyards with the freshest and lightest production. A wine that is a representation of how Bolgheri knows how to produce wines of great drinkability and satisfying complexity. The maturations are never excessive as are the extractions. Right from the vineyard management, the aim is to produce a wine that is representative of Bolgheri's joy

Grape varieties Sangiovese 30%, Cabernet Sauvignon, 30% Merlot, 20% Syrah 10%, Teroldego 10%

Harvest period Da inizio Settembre (Merlot) alla prima di Ottobre (Cabernet Sauvignon)

Vineyards Torre, Vignanova, Poderini, Campastrello

Vinification Fermentation takes place in steel and cement tanks using spontaneous yeasts. Initially, two pumpovers per day are carried out, which are later thinned out depending on how the extraction proceeds. The same applies to the maceration time, estimated on the basis of frequent tastings. After malolactic fermentation, which naturally take place in November, the various vinifications are assembled and go into maturation Fining 12 months, part in cement casks (30 hl), part in barriques of second and third passage

Longevity 10 years

Michele Satta, Piastraia Rosso Bolgheri Superiore 2021

Bolgheri Superiore - D.O.C.

In ‘91 Michele planted the first vineyard with Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Sangiovese and Syrah, with the aim of indulging both the established great expression of Bordeaux grape varieties in Bolgheri, both the all-Tuscan elegance of Sangiovese and the all-Mediterranean complexity of Syrah. It is the first wine in the territory to use the Bolgheri Rosso designation. From 2012 it becomes Bolgheri Rosso Superiore, as the vines have now reached sufficient age to express all their complexity. As of the 2019 vintage, Syrah is no longer part of the blend.

Grape varieties Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Sangiovese

Harvest period Beginning of September (Merlot) to end of September .

Vineyards Torre, Poderini, Vignanova, i Castagni, Campastrello

Vinification Each variety fermented separately in cement casks truncated conical cement casks of 30 hl. The yeasts are exclusively spontaneous. After two to three days of open pump-over, only one pump-over per day is carried out closed. With frequent tastings, the moment of racking is carefully chosen (usually after about 20 days), after which the wine goes directly into barriques to carry out malolactic fermentation. Fining Maturation in French barriques with 40% new wood for a time between 12 and 18 months.

Longevity 20 years
