Giuseppe Apicella, Campania, Italy
The story of a Family
This is the story of a family that cultivates the passion for wine and vineyards for several decades. In 1977, Giuseppe Apicella gave a new course to the activity of grape producers. Our first wine was made here, in a production of 3000 bottles of Red Tramonti.
From that first result, we have studied the territory, found other land and won the slopes of the hills to rediscover new grafts and new aromas. Now, we reached our 40th harvest thanks to the patience, dedication and foresight of Giuseppe and his son Prisco – the winemaker of the company.
Seven hectares of terraces in the middle of Amalfi Coast
The vineyards of Apicella’s wineries stand out on about 7 hectares of terraces, located at an altitude between 300 and 600 meters above sea level, mainly exposed to midday.
The estates are all located in Tramonti, in the heart of Amalfi Coast, set in the protected natural area of “Monti Lattari”.
We conduct the vineyard by winning the slopes; riping it off from the hills and cultivating our grapes with integrated pest management practices (IPM).
The land consists of incoherent tuffs and debris. The vines are frank feet, bred at atypical rays.
This is the elements mix thanks to which we get an excellent wine.
Evident traces of a viticulture with an ancient tradition (plants of the early ‘900) are found in the Municipality of Tramonti, which can boast the presence on its territory of native vines, that is, freefoot, implanted with the typical Tramonti pergola breeding.
Cantine Apicella preserves these centuries-old vineyards and is committed to recovering all the varieties of native grapes including Tintore di Tramonti, Pepella, Ginestra, Biancazita, Piedirosso.
Giuseppe Apicella, Piedirosso
Description: Piedorosso also known as “per‘ ‘e palummo”, for the red color of the grape-stalk recalling that of the pigeons’ claw, is a typical variety from Campania. This wine, made from vines grown on volcanic soil and crafted according to the tradition of the Amalfi Coast, exhibits clear ruby red and flavors of dusty raspberry, cedar wood with lively acidity. It is so light and elegant that it can be enjoyed with a slight chill. A great dinner wine that works with a wide range of food, even fish.
Food pairing: Versatile, from cheese, grilled fish, anything with tomato sauce to steak, etc.
