Cantina Su’Entu, Sardinia, Italy

Marmilla is a sub-region of Sardinia located in the central-southern area of the island, bordered to the West by Campidano, to the South by Trexenta, to the East by Sarcidano, to the North by Barigadu and Mandrolisai. This cradle of history, myths and traditions is framed by naturalistic sites such as Giara di Tuili, Giarda di Siddi and Monte Arci which delimit its border to the North with its infinite deposits of obsidian. Thanks to its geographical position and the characteristics of its land, Marmilla has always been an ideal place for agriculture and, in ancient times, was considered the Granary of Rome. The traditions of Sanluri bread and a very rich variety of dry pasta, in some cases peculiar to a single municipality, such as lorighittas, are still linked to wheat. Historically, this region has also stood out for the production of legumes and viticulture. Its clayey calcareous soil is poor, but perfect for the vine that finds here the ideal conditions to generate grapes that give products of the highest quality. This is why such a small territory had three social wineries until the 1970s. The Su'entu farm is located a few kilometers from the municipality of Sanluri: the heart of Marmilla and a city that preserves an ancient agricultural tradition. The toponym Sanluri itself derives from the words logu de lori, or the place of wheat.

The Pilloni family has peasant origins: grandfather Ernesto, already owned land dedicated to agriculture and vineyards from which he produced Nuragus and Monica at the beginning of the 50s, but then specialized in the trade of cereals and legumes, in which his children soon joined him. For the next 40 years the family's commitment was in the trade sector. The call of the land, however, is known to be strong, so Ernesto's third son, Salvatore, founder of the winery, chose to return to his origins to consolidate an already deep bond with his land and his roots. His children followed him and what was initially just a dream soon became a family passion and an important entrepreneurial project. Today the winery is led by Valeria and Roberta Pilloni, supported by a close-knit team of winemakers and cellarmen who were trained under the expert guidance of an agronomist and an oenologist. The entire team embarked on this adventure together, increasing their skills and passion day after day. Thanks to everyone's love and professionalism, today Su'entu produces and exports all over the world.

“Agriculture and nature are often contrasted in common thought, but in our case they are the protagonists of a happy story that demonstrates how in reality man's work can also be good for the environment. The hill where Su'entu stands today once hosted vineyards, but since the 1970s it had been abandoned, turning into a hostile territory that animals had soon abandoned due to lack of resources. Although the area fell and still falls today in a Nature Reserve, the presence of wildlife had been reduced to the bone. With the recultivation of the land and the birth of our vineyard, a new opportunity for repopulation has arisen for wild fauna to which our rows guarantee water, food and shelter. With the precious support of the agronomist, we constantly monitor the presence of birds and small mammals within the estate: partridges, woodcocks, woodcocks, cattle egrets, foxes, hares, weasels are just some of the fourteen species recorded. Our daily commitment to protecting the natural environment translates into the use of precision agriculture that allows us to optimize processing, in the circular management of raw materials, in the use of renewable energy such as that which, thanks to the photovoltaic system, makes us practically self-sufficient in various periods of the year.”
